# Creating a Model with the Modeler Agent in Lucanet xP&A

## Overview

The Modeler Agent is an AI agent built into Lucanet xP&A that builds a planning model from a plain-language description. Instead of scaffolding sections, variable groups, variables, timesteps, aggregations, and formulas by hand, you describe the model you want and the agent generates it for you using the xP&A formula language.

We recommend that you start every new model with the Modeler Agent, unless the model needs something the agent cannot do yet (see [Current Restrictions of the Modeler Agent](#current-restrictions-of-the-modeler-agent-in-lucanet-xpa)). Even if you need to adjust the result manually afterwards, the agent takes care of most of the structural setup.

You can open the Modeler Agent:

- In the **Create model** dialog, using the option **Generate a model** (see [Generating a Model with the Modeler Agent](#generating-a-model-with-the-modeler-agent-in-lucanet-xpa))
- In [Lucanet Lume](https://support.lucanet.com/en/documentation/lume/agents.md)

> **Note:** To use the Modeler Agent, a user with the **License Manager** role must have activated the AI features of the Lucanet CFO Solution Platform in the **Lucanet licenses** workspace. For more information, see [Managing Lucanet Licenses | Activating and Deactivating the AI Features](https://support.lucanet.com/en/documentation/administration/platform-management/licenses.md#activating-and-deactivating-the-ai-features).

## Preparing Dimensions for the Modeler Agent in Lucanet xP&A

The Modeler Agent uses the [dimensions](https://support.lucanet.com/en/documentation/xp-a---extended-planning-and-analysis/modeling-your-data/using-dimensions.md) that already exist in xP&A. It does not create dimensions for you.

If you ask for a model that is broken down, for example, by department or employee, but the dimension does not exist, the agent works around the missing dimension, e.g. by creating separate flat variables per department or hard-coded lists.

Therefore, before you write your prompt:

1. [Create every dimension](https://support.lucanet.com/en/documentation/xp-a---extended-planning-and-analysis/modeling-your-data/using-dimensions/create-edit-dimensions.md) that the model needs, e.g. **Department**, **Employee**, **Cost Center**, or **Entity**.
2. Add the dimension items to each dimension.
3. Note the exact names of the dimensions. You will use them word for word in your prompt.

## Generating a Model with the Modeler Agent in Lucanet xP&A

To generate a model with the Modeler Agent in Lucanet xP&A:

1. On the xP&A start page, click **New model**.

2. In the **Create model** dialog, select the option **Generate a model**. The prompt section of the Modeler Agent is displayed on the right side of the dialog as follows:

![Shows the 'Create model' dialog in Lucanet xP&A. Highlighted in red are the 'Generate a model' option in the RECOMMENDED section on the left and the Modeler Agent panel on the right, which reads 'Generate a model — Describe your model to start building' with example shortcuts including 'Create a SaaS Revenue model with ARR, churn, and expansion.'](https://support.lucanet.com/assets/docs-images/xp-a---extended-planning-and-analysis/creating-model/modeler-agent/_images/en/generate_a_model.png)
Generating a new model with the Modeler Agent

3. In the prompt section, describe the model you want to build in plain language, e.g. "Create a SaaS revenue model with ARR, churn, and expansion". Name the dimensions to be used with their exact names.

For tips on what a good prompt contains, see [Writing a Prompt for the Modeler Agent](#writing-a-prompt-for-the-modeler-agent-in-lucanet-xpa).

4. The Modeler Agent generates a plan for building the model before it builds anything. The plan lists the inputs, outputs, and sections of the model, for example:

![Shows the Modeler Agent's proposed plan in Lucanet xP&A for the prompt "Create a SaaS Revenue model with ARR, churn, and expansion." The plan card is titled 'SaaS Revenue Model' and lists Inputs (starting metrics: active customers (100), average ARPU ($50); monthly rates: new customer growth (5%), churn (2%), expansion (1%)), Outputs (MRR, ARR, total active customer count, average ARPU), and Sections (Inputs, Customer Metrics, Revenue Metrics, Summary), with a 'Build model' button below.](https://support.lucanet.com/assets/docs-images/xp-a---extended-planning-and-analysis/creating-model/modeler-agent/_images/en/modeler_agent.png)
Example for a proposal of the Modeler Agent

5. Review the proposed plan (see [Reviewing the Plan of the Modeler Agent](#reviewing-the-plan-of-the-modeler-agent-in-lucanet-xpa)). If needed, ask the agent questions about the plan or ask it to modify the suggestion, e.g.:

    - "Apply the Department dimension to the summary section too."
    - "Add a salary increase % input that applies from April."

Repeat this until the plan matches what you want. Changing the plan is much easier than fixing a model that has already been built.

6. Once the plan meets your expectation, click **Build model**.

The Modeler Agent creates the model based on the proposed plan. You can edit every section, cell, formula, or variable as in any other model (see [Modeling Your Data](https://support.lucanet.com/en/documentation/xp-a---extended-planning-and-analysis/modeling-your-data.md)).

## Writing a Prompt for the Modeler Agent in Lucanet xP&A

The more precisely you describe the model, the better the plan of the Modeler Agent will be. A good prompt covers the following:

| Topic | Example |
|---|---|
| **Purpose of the model** | Personnel expense planning for next year's budget |
| **Dimensions to be used**, with their exact names | **Department** and **Employee** |
| **Key inputs** | Headcount, salary, start dates, bonus %, social charges % |
| **Key outputs** | Total personnel cost by department and month |
| **Time granularity and horizon** | Monthly, 12 months |

**Example**

A prompt such as "Build a personnel expense model." gives the agent very little to work with.

The following prompt leads to a much more precise plan:

> Build a personnel expense model for the 2027 budget, monthly. Use the **Department** and **Employee** dimensions. Inputs per employee: annual base salary, start date, end date, bonus % and employer social charges %. Calculate monthly salary cost, bonus accrual, social charges and total personnel cost. Summarize total personnel cost by Department.

## Reviewing the Plan of the Modeler Agent in Lucanet xP&A

Before you click **Build model**, check the following in the proposed plan:

| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| **Dimensions** | Are the dimensions you named included in the plan and applied to the right variables? This is the most important check. If a dimension is missing or wrong, tell the agent before building the model. |
| **Inputs** | Are the right values set up as inputs, and is everything else calculated? |
| **Outputs** | Are all the results you need to see included? |
| **Structure** | Do the sections make sense for the users of the model? |

## Current Restrictions of the Modeler Agent in Lucanet xP&A

> **Warning:** At the moment, the following restrictions apply for the Modeler Agent:
>
> - The Modeler Agent does not read data sources and cannot connect them. This applies to:
> - Reports from Consolidation & Financial Planning
> - Excel files
> - Any other data sources
> - The Modeler Agent does not create dimensions. Create the dimensions beforehand as described in [Preparing Dimensions for the Modeler Agent](#preparing-dimensions-for-the-modeler-agent-in-lucanet-xpa).
> - Once a model has been created, you cannot edit it with the Modeler Agent. Edit the model manually instead. To repair formulas or cells in an existing model, use the function **Fix with AI**.
