# Displaying the Change Log

## Overview

The change history of an element is displayed in its **Change log**.

The change log displays what changed, when, and whether a user or the system made the change, covering new entries, updates, and moves.

You can open the change log from each workspace and it lists:

- The element
- Its unique identifier
- Its parent when relevant
- The action performed on the element
- Depending on the workspace, additional columns

Change log entries for **manual** and **Excel Add-in postings** additionally offer a version link that opens the previous version in a new window, so you can compare what changed without leaving your audit trail.

## Comparing a Version of a Posting in its Change Log

If a manual posting or an Excel posting was changed, the change log of the posting allows you to compare the current version with the previous one. To do so, simply click the **Predecessor** link shown in the **Version** column of the change log:

Link 'Predecessor'

{% info-box %}
**If Version or Predecessor is missing:**

- Note that the change log can still list changes without a **Version** column or without links — do not assume every change includes a viewable previous version.
- Use the other columns (**Date and time**, **User**, **Action**, **Parent**) when no **Predecessor** link is available.
